As Milk Is to the Baby

baarik ka-o jaisay kheer baalhaa chaatrik mukh jaisay jalDharaa.
As milk is dear to the baby, and the raindrop is dear to the mouth of the rainbird,
ਮਛੁਲੀ ਕਉ ਜੈਸੇ ਨੀਰੁ ਬਾਲਹਾ ਤਿਉ ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਰਾਮਈਆ ॥੪॥
machhulee ka-o jaisay neer baalhaa ti-o mayrai man raam-ee-aa. ||4||
and as water is dear to the fish, so is the Lord to my mind. ||4||

In plain words

Think of a baby who needs nothing but milk, the little rainbird who drinks only the falling raindrop, the fish who cannot live a moment out of water.

That is how much I need the One. Not sometimes, not partly — the way a fish needs water, all the time, to simply be alive.

I need the One the way a fish needs water — not sometimes, but to be alive at all.
The deeper layer

I need the One the way a fish needs water, to be alive at all.

Baarik ka-o jaisay kheer baalhaa: as milk is dear to the baarik, the baby. Chaatrik mukh jaisay jalDharaa: as the falling raindrop is dear to the chaatrik, the rainbird, which drinks only rain as it falls. Machhulee ka-o jaisay neer baalhaa: as water is dear to the fish.

The pictures grow stronger here. They move from liking something to needing it to live. Think of a goldfish in its bowl. It needs that water every second. The One is like that: the very water of my life.

A Question to Sit With

What in your life is like water is to a fish — something you can't do without?
