The True Name Is My Aartee

ਦਸ ਅਠਾ ਅਠਸਠੇ ਚਾਰੇ ਖਾਣੀ ਇਹੈ ਵਰਤਣਿ ਹੈ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥
das athaa athsathay chaaray khaanee ihai vartan hai sagal sansaaray.
The whole world is engrossed in the eighteen Puraanas, the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, and the four sources of creation.
kahai ravidaas naam tayro aartee sat naam hai har bhog tuhaaray. ||4||3||
Says Ravi Daas, Your Name is my Aartee, my lamp-lit worship-service. The True Name, Sat Naam, is the food which I offer to You. ||4||3||

In plain words

The whole world runs after holy books, famous shrines, and faraway sacred places, sure the answer must be out there somewhere.

But my worship is simple: Your Name is my ceremony of lights, and the True Name is the food I set before You. That is the whole feast, and it is enough.

You do not have to travel far to offer the One your best.
The deeper layer

People search for the holy in many places, and Ravi Daas finds it in the Name.

He names the great places people look. Das athaa are the eighteen Puraanas, old holy books. Athsathay are the sixty-eight famous places of pilgrimage. Chaaray khaanee are the four ways that life is born. The whole world is busy with these.

Beside all of it, Ravi Daas sets one thing: sat naam, the True Name. He offers it as bhog, food laid lovingly before the One. This is his famous inward turn. Worship is carried in the heart, wherever you are, rather than sought at faraway places.

A Question to Sit With

Why do people often assume the important thing must be somewhere far away?
