Verse 3 of 5

A Sublime Lamp, a Pure Wick

ਊਤਮੁ ਦੀਅਰਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਬਾਤੀ ॥
ootam dee-araa nirmal baatee.
Sublime is the lamp, and pure is the wick.
ਤੁਹੀ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਕਮਲਾ ਪਾਤੀ ॥੨॥
tuheeN niranjan kamlaa paatee. ||2||
You are immaculate and pure, O Brilliant Lord of Wealth! ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The lamp I lift is a fine one, and its wick is clean and pure. I bring You my very best, not my leftovers.

But the truest light in the room is You — spotless, shining, holding every true treasure. My little flame is only pointing at Yours.

The best light we can offer is only a reflection of a greater one.
The deeper layer

The lamp is lovely, and the One is the greater Light it points to.

Ootam dee-araa nirmal baatee — a fine lamp and a pure, clean wick. They match the next words: tuheeN niranjan, You are niranjan, the stainless One, untouched by any smudge.

The outer lamp is beautiful because it is a picture of the inner, spotless Light. Think of the moon. It glows, but only because it reflects the sun.

A Question to Sit With

What is something beautiful that reminds you of something even more beautiful behind it?
