Dhanaasaree, Third Mehl:
ਮਨੁ ਮਰੈ ਧਾਤੁ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
man marai Dhaat mar jaa-ay.
When the mind is conquered, its turbulent wanderings are stopped.
ਬਿਨੁ ਮਨ ਮੂਏ ਕੈਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

Without conquering the mind, how can the Lord be found?
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਰੈ ਦਾਰੂ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
ih man marai daaroo jaanai ko-ay.
Rare is the one who knows the medicine to conquer the mind.
ਮਨੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
man sabad marai boojhai jan so-ay. ||1||
The mind is conquered through the Word of the Shabad; this is known to the Lord's humble servant. ||1||

In plain words

When the restless mind grows still, its endless wandering stops.

Without stilling the mind, how could the One be found? Rare is the one who knows the medicine, and the mind is stilled through the Word; the One's own know this.

A restless mind can be settled, and the Word is its gentle medicine.
The deeper layer

A restless mind can be settled, and the Word is its medicine.

Man marai Dhaat mar jaa-ay — when the mind is stilled, its Dhaat, its restless running around, stops. The word marai means "dies." Here it means the grabbing, jumpy mind settling down. Nothing gloomy. Think of a snow globe after you stop shaking it, the flakes drifting down until the water is clear.

Ih man marai daaroo jaanai ko-ay — only a few know the daaroo, the medicine. Man sabad marai — the mind is stilled through the Word. The cure for a restless mind is the Word, held quietly inside.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your mind settle down when it is racing all over the place?
