Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 13
Verse 5 of 5

There Is Only One Giver To Turn To

ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਦਾਤਾ ਇਕੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
kis no kahee-ai daataa ik so-ay.
Who else should I speak to? The One Lord is the Giver of all.
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
kirpaa karay sabad milaavaa ho-ay.
When He grants His Grace, then we obtain the Word of the Shabad.
ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ॥
mil pareetam saachay gun gaavaa.
Meeting with my Beloved, I sing the Glorious Praises of the True Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਭਾਵਾ ॥੪॥੫॥
naanak saachay saachaa bhaavaa. ||4||5||
O Nanak, becoming truthful, I have become pleasing to the True Lord. ||4||5||

In plain words

Who else is there to turn to? The One is the only Giver.

When grace comes, the Word is found; meeting my Beloved, I sing the true One's praises, and becoming true myself, I grow dear to the True One.

There is one Giver worth turning to, and becoming true is how we grow close.
The deeper layer

There is one Giver to turn to, and living true is how we grow close.

This verse closes the shabad. Kis no kahee-ai daataa ik so-ay — who else would I talk to? The One is the only Giver. Kirpaa karay sabad milaavaa ho-ay — when grace comes, the Word is found.

The ending is lovely: naanak saachay saachaa bhaavaa. Becoming true, I become dear to the True One. This is the big idea of Sach, Truth. The way to be close to the Real is to be real yourself. Friends grow close by being honest with each other, not by pretending.

A Question to Sit With

How do you become closer to someone, by pretending, or by being real with them?
