Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 13
Verse 4 of 5

When The Ego Grows Quiet, Peace Comes

ਨ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
na sabad boojhai na jaanai banee.
The blind, self-willed manmukh does not understand the Shabad; he does not know the Word of the Guru's Bani,
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਧੇ ਦੁਖਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥
manmukh anDhay dukh vihaanee.
and so he passes his life in misery.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਤਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
satgur bhaytay taa sukh paa-ay.
But if he meets the True Guru, then he finds peace,
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥੩॥
ha-umai vichahu thaak rahaa-ay. ||3||
and the ego within is silenced. ||3||

In plain words

Someone shut off from the Word and Bani passes life in a fog of hurt.

But meeting the true Guru, peace comes, and the ego inside grows still.

When the noisy ego grows quiet, peace has room to move in.
The deeper layer

When the noisy ego grows quiet, peace comes in.

The verse shows two ways to live. Manmukh anDhay dukh vihaanee — the manmukh, a person facing only their own wants, lives as if blind and spends life in pain. It is like walking in thick fog. It is a place to come out of, not a place to stay.

Satgur bhaytay taa sukh paa-ay — meeting the true Guru brings peace. Ha-umai vichahu thaak rahaa-ay — and haumai, the ego inside, grows still. The ego here is a restlessness to calm down, not a crime.
