Taming What Seemed Untamable

ਮਨੁ ਅਸਾਧੁ ਸਾਧੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
man asaaDh saaDhai jan ko-ee.
The mind is undisciplined; only a rare few can discipline it.
ਅਚਰੁ ਚਰੈ ਤਾ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
achar charai taa nirmal ho-ee.
If someone eats the uneatable, then he becomes immaculate.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਇਆ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥
gurmukh ih man la-i-aa savaar.
As Gurmukh, his mind is embellished.
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਤਜੈ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥੩॥
ha-umai vichahu tajai vikaar. ||3||
Egotism and corruption are eradicated from within. ||3||

In plain words

The mind is hard to tame, and only a rare person tames it.

Do the thing that seemed impossible, and you grow clear and clean.

Turned toward the Guru, this mind is set right. Ego and its troubles leave from within.

What looks impossible to tame can be tamed, one gentle step at a time.
The deeper layer

What looks impossible to tame can be tamed with the Guru's help.

Man asaaDh saaDhai jan ko-ee — the mind is asaaDh, hard to train, and only a rare person trains it. Achar charai taa nirmal ho-ee — the words say "eat the uneatable." They mean doing what seemed impossible. Then a person becomes clean and clear. Think of learning to ride a bike: it seems impossible, until one day it is not.

Gurmukh ih man la-i-aa savaar — a gurmukh, a person turned toward the Guru, sets this mind right. Ha-umai vichahu tajai vikaar — haumai, the ego, and the troubles it brings leave from within.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that once seemed impossible for you but got easier with practice?
