Verse 4 of 4

Held In A Union That Never Breaks

ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਰਖਿਅਨੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
jo Dhur rakhi-an mayl milaa-ay.
Those whom the Primal Lord keeps united in His Union,
ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜਹਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
kaday na vichhurheh sabad samaa-ay.
shall never be separated from Him; they are merged in the Word of the Shabad.
ਆਪਣੀ ਕਲਾ ਆਪੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
aapnee kalaa aapay parabh jaanai.
Only God Himself knows His own power.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੪॥੬॥
naanak gurmukh naam pachhaanai. ||4||6||
O Nanak, the Gurmukh realizes the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||6||

In plain words

Those the One keeps joined from the very beginning are never separated. They melt into the Word.

Only the One knows His own power. Turned toward the Guru, a person comes to recognize the Name.

A bond the One holds from the start is a bond that never breaks.
The deeper layer

A bond the One holds never breaks.

This verse closes the shabad. Jo Dhur rakhi-an mayl milaa-ay — those the One keeps joined from the very beginning kaday na vichhurheh, are never separated. They are sabad samaa-ay, melted into the Word. Think of a strong knot tied by the best hands. Tugging only pulls it tighter.

Aapnee kalaa aapay prabh jaanai — only the One knows His own kalaa, His power. Gurmukh naam pachhaanai — the one turned toward the Guru comes to recognize the Name.

A Question to Sit With

What is a bond in your life that you trust will never break?
