Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 16
Verse 5 of 5

The One Creator, and No Other

ਆਪੇ ਸਾਜੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
aapay saajay kartaa so-ay.
The Creator Lord Himself fashions all.
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
tis bin doojaa avar na ko-ay.
Without Him, there is no other at all.
ਜਿਸੁ ਸਚਿ ਲਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
jis sach laa-ay so-ee laagai.
He alone is attached to Truth, whom the Lord Himself so attaches.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਆਗੈ ॥੪॥੮॥
naanak naam sadaa sukh aagai. ||4||8||
O Nanak, through the Naam, lasting peace is attained in the hereafter. ||4||8||

In plain words

It is the One who shapes everything there is, and beside that One there is nothing else.

Whoever is drawn to truth is drawn by that same One — and living close to the Name brings a calm that carries you onward.

There is only One behind everything, and it is drawing you home.
The deeper layer

The One made everything, and there is nothing apart from the One.

The shabad closes with pure oneness. Tis bin doojaa avar na ko-ay — without the One, there is no other at all. Think of the ocean and its waves. Every wave is still the ocean.

Jis sach laa-ay so-ee laagai — the person joined to Truth is the one the One joins to it. This echoes the final note of the shabad just before this one.

Naanak naam sadaa sukh aagai — the peace of the Name is a steadiness that goes with you into whatever comes next.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel calm and steady when you do not know what comes next?
