Let Go of Pride, Find Lasting Peace

ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕਾ ਧਨੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
bikhi-aa kaa Dhan bahut abhimaan.
Poisonous wealth gives rise to great arrogance.
ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਡੂਬੈ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
ahaNkaar doobai na paavai maan.
Drowning in egotism, no one is honored.
ਆਪੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
aap chhod sadaa sukh ho-ee.
Forsaking self-conceit, one finds lasting peace.

Under Guru's Instruction, he praises the True Lord. ||3||

In plain words

Piling up things just to feel important puffs a person up, and the more they cling to that puffed-up feeling, the less peace they have.

Set the self-importance down, and a steady, lasting calm arrives — and with it, praise for the One who is real.

Peace comes the moment you stop needing to look important.
The deeper layer

Pride is heavy, and setting it down brings lasting peace.

Bikhi-aa kaa Dhan, "poison wealth," is money and things chased for their own sake. It feeds pride. Abhimaan and ahankaar both mean pride, thinking too much of yourself. Doobai na paavai maan — pride makes a person sink, and they never find true honor. It is like trying to swim while carrying a backpack full of rocks.

Then comes the turn: aap chhod sadaa sukh ho-ee — let go of the grip of "I, I, I," and lasting peace comes. Pride is a weight to put down. It is not something to be shamed for.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how much lighter you feel when you stop trying to impress everyone?
