Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 16
Verse 3 of 5

When Ego Quiets, We Are Gathered In

ਹਮ ਮੂਰਖ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
ham moorakh moorakh man maahi.
We are ignorant; ignorance fills our minds.
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਭ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
ha-umai vich sabh kaar kamaahi.
We do all our deeds in ego.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹੰਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
gur parsaadee haN-umai jaa-ay.
By Guru's Grace, egotism is eradicated.
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
aapay bakhsay la-ay milaa-ay. ||2||
Forgiving us, the Lord blends us with Himself. ||2||

In plain words

Sometimes our minds fill up with foolish thinking. It is easy to act out of pride, feeling like a separate little self at the center of everything.

But when that hard shell of ‘me-first’ softens through grace, the feeling of being cut off melts, and we are quietly welcomed home.

When the wall of ‘me-first’ softens, you find you were never alone.
The deeper layer

Pride makes us feel apart, and grace gently brings us home.

Ham moorakh — "we are foolish." This is a soft, honest thing to say about ourselves, not an insult. The real subject is haumai, ego, the feeling of being a separate little self at the center of everything. Gur parsaadee — through the Guru's grace — that feeling dissolves.

Haumai is like a scraped knee that needs care, not a crime that needs punishing. When it quiets, aapay bakhsay la-ay milaa-ay — the One forgives and gently blends us back in, like a drop of rain returning to the ocean.

A Question to Sit With

When has letting go of needing to be right made you feel closer to someone?
