The Lord's Name is wonderful! God Himself imparts it.

kalee kaal vich gurmukh paa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
In the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Gurmukhs obtain it. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Naam is a wonder, and the One lets us hear it.

Even now, in this noisy, forgetful age, whoever turns toward the Guru finds it.

The wonder finds you the moment you turn to listen.
The deeper layer

The Name is a wonder, and the One is the one who lets us hear it.

This one-line Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad, carries the whole song. Har naam achraj — the Name is a marvel. Parabh aap sunaa-ay — the One personally makes us hear it. It is like a friend handing you one earbud so you can hear the song they love.

Kalee kaal means the dark, distracted age we live in. The verse finds no reason for despair in it. The gurmukh, the one who faces toward the Guru's teaching, finds the wonder even here. Chanting and hearing the Name are the very way the wonder reaches us.

A Question to Sit With

What is something amazing you only noticed once someone helped you pay attention?
