Verse 3 of 4

After Long Wandering, a Little Mercy

ਬਹੁਤੇ ਫੇਰ ਪਏ ਕਿਰਪਨ ਕਉ ਅਬ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
bahutay fayr pa-ay kirpan ka-o ab kichh kirpaa keejai.
I was wretched; I wandered through so many cycles of reincarnation. Now, Lord, please bless me with Your Grace.
ਹੋਹੁ ਦਇਆਲ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਹੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਐਸੀ ਬਖਸ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥੨॥
hohu da-i-aal darsan dayh apunaa aisee bakhas kareejai. ||2||
Be merciful, and grant me the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan; please grant me such a gift. ||2||

In plain words

I have wandered a long, long way and felt small and far from home.

Now, please, show me a little kindness — let me see You face to face, and let that be Your gift to me.

However far you have wandered, one moment of grace can turn you toward home.
The deeper layer

However far you have wandered, a little grace can turn you toward home.

Bahutay fayr pa-ay kirpan ka-o — I, a poor and needy one, have gone round and round many times. The verse pictures many rounds of life, a long, long wandering. It is met with a simple prayer: ab kichh kirpaa keejai, now show me some grace.

Hohu da-i-aal darsan dayh apunaa — be kind, and give me Your darshan, the blessed sight of the One. The long wandering is a long search that finally turns toward home. Picture a traveler who spots the porch light of home after a long night drive.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt lost for a while, and then something small helped you find your way?
