In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

Those who give themselves to the One find that their old mistakes are washed clean away.

So be kind to me too, and keep me in the Sangat that You love.

Staying close to the Sangat washes you clean.
The deeper layer

Being in the Sangat washes us clean, so we ask to stay there.

The heading says Mehl 4, which means Guru Ram Das, the fourth Guru. His shabads in this Raag begin here. Jo har sayveh sant bhagat tin kay sabh paap nivaaree — those who serve the One have all their faults cleared away. Paap means faults, the wrong turns we take.

Then comes the ask: keep me in the sangat You love — the Sangat, people gathered together to remember the One. Think of a muddy shirt in a warm wash. The mud comes out, because it was never part of the shirt. Our faults wash off in the Sangat in the same way. They are not stains to carry in shame forever.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people who bring out the best, kindest version of you?
