Verse 3 of 5

Honor The World Cannot Give

ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਖਣ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਇ ॥
vakhar naam daykhan ko-ee jaa-ay.
How rare is the one who goes out, and searches for the merchandise of the Naam.
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਚਾਖੈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਖਾਇ ॥
naa ko chaakhai naa ko khaa-ay.
No one tastes it, and no one eats it.
ਲੋਕਿ ਪਤੀਣੈ ਨਾ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
lok pateenai naa pat ho-ay.
Honor is not obtained by trying to please other people.
ਤਾ ਪਤਿ ਰਹੈ ਰਾਖੈ ਜਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥
taa pat rahai raakhai jaa so-ay. ||2||
One's honor is preserved, only if the Lord preserves it. ||2||

In plain words

Rare is the one who goes out looking for the treasure of the Name. Few even taste it.

And honor is not won by pleasing the crowd. Real honor is kept safe only by the One.

The honor that lasts does not come from the crowd's approval but from what is true within.
The deeper layer

Real honor is not won by pleasing the crowd. Only the One keeps it safe.

Vakhar naam — the Name as goods for sale. This is a favorite Dhanaasaree picture, since the raag's name carries the sense of wealth and trade. A rare trader goes out looking for it. Yet naa ko chaakhai naa ko khaa-ay — few taste it, and few take it in.

Then comes a quietly bold teaching about honor. Lok pateenai naa pat ho-ay — pleasing people does not bring true honor. Likes on a post come and go in a day. Pat, honor, stays only when the One keeps it.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever done something right even though the crowd did not clap for it?
