Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 2
Verse 4 of 5

Wherever I Look, There You Are

ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
jah daykhaa tah rahi-aa samaa-ay.
Wherever I look, there I see Him, pervading and permeating.
ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
tuDh bin doojee naahee jaa-ay.
Without You, I have no other place of rest.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਰੇ ਕੀਤੈ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥
jay ko karay keetai ki-aa ho-ay.
He may try, but what can anyone do by his own doing?
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥
jis no bakhsay saachaa so-ay. ||3||
He alone is blessed, whom the True Lord forgives. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Everywhere I look, You are already there. Without You there is no resting place at all.

What can anyone do just by their own doing? The one who is blessed is the one the true One embraces.

The One is not far away to be found, but everywhere already, waiting to be noticed.
The deeper layer

Wherever I look, the One is already there.

Jah daykhaa tah rahi-aa samaa-ay — wherever I look, the One is there, filling everything. It is like the air in a room, in every corner at once. TuDh bin doojee naahee jaa-ay — without You there is no other resting place. The One is the only home.

The last lines turn down the volume on our own effort. Jay ko karay keetai ki-aa ho-ay — what can anyone do by their own doing alone? Everything lands on grace. The blessed one is the one the true One forgives and holds close.

A Question to Sit With

Where is a place you feel most at home and at rest?
