Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 22
Verse 2 of 4

I Cannot Last a Moment Without You

har bin reh na saka-o ik raatee.
Without the Lord, I cannot live for even a second.
ji-o bin amlai amlee mar jaa-ee hai ti-o har bin ham mar jaatee. rahaa-o.
Like the addict who dies without his drug, I die without the Lord. ||Pause||
tum har sarvar at agaah ham leh na sakahi ant maatee.
You, Lord, are the deepest, most unfathomable ocean; I cannot find even a trace of Your limits.
too parai parai aprampar su-aamee mit jaanhu aapan gaatee. ||2||
You are the most remote of the remote, limitless and transcendent; O Lord Master, You alone know Your state and extent. ||2||

In plain words

Without You, I cannot last even a moment. Like someone who cannot go without what they depend on, I cannot go on without You.

You are an ocean so deep I could never reach its bottom. You are farther and vaster than any measuring, and only You know how great You are.

The more you love something, the deeper and wider it turns out to be.
The deeper layer

Without the One, the heart cannot last even a moment.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. har bin reh na saka-o ik raatee — without the One, I cannot last even a moment. The need is that strong.

Then the verse opens wide. tum har sarvar at agaah — You are an ocean too deep to measure. too parai parai aprampar — You are beyond, and beyond, with no end. Think of standing on a beach and looking out. You cannot see the other side. Here longing and vastness meet. The more we love, the bigger and more beyond measuring the Beloved seems.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you love so much that the more you know it, the bigger it gets?
