Verse 5 of 6

Holding The Guru In The Heart

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
satgur kee moorat hirdai vasaa-ay.
He enshrines the image of the True Guru in his heart.
ਜੋ ਇਛੈ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
jo ichhai so-ee fal paa-ay.
He obtains the rewards which he desires.
ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੈ ॥
saachaa saahib kirpaa karai.
The True Lord and Master grants His Grace;
ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਕੈਸਾ ਡਰੈ ॥੪॥
so sayvak jam tay kaisaa darai. ||4||
how can such a servant be afraid of death? ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Keep the living image of the true Guru in your heart, and you receive the fruit your heart longs for.

The true One pours out grace. So how could such a one ever fear death?

Keep what you love in your heart, and fear loses its grip.
The deeper layer

Keep the Guru in your heart, and fear lets go of you.

Satgur kee moorat hirdai vasaa-ay — keep the form of the true Guru in your heart. Think of a photo of someone you love that you keep in your pocket. You carry it everywhere, and it makes you brave.

Jo ichhai so-ee fal paa-ay — you receive the fruit you long for. This means the heart's deepest longing, not every wish that pops up, like a new video game. The verse ends with a question: jam tay kaisaa darai, how could such a person be afraid of death? It is meant as comfort. Grace has melted the fear away completely.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what do you like to keep in your heart to feel brave?
