The Word Is The Finest Practice Of All

bhanat naanak karay veechaar.
Prays Nanak, practice contemplation,
saachee banee si-o Dharay pi-aar.
and enshrine love for the True Word of His Bani.
taa ko paavai mokh du-aar.
Then, you shall find the Gate of Salvation.

This Shabad is the most excellent of all chanting and austere meditations. ||5||2||4||

In plain words

Reflect deeply, and love the true Word of Bani — this is Nanak's prayer.

That opens the door of freedom. Of all the chanting and discipline there is, this Word is the very best.

Loving the true Word is the heart of every practice.
The deeper layer

Loving the true Word is the heart of every practice.

This verse closes the shabad. Bhanat naanak karay veechaar — Nanak says, think deeply. Saachee banee si-o Dharay pi-aar — and love the true Word, the Bani. That is mokh du-aar, the door to freedom.

The last line is jap tap sabh ih sabad hai saar — this Word is the heart of all chanting and all hard discipline. It lifts the Word above every method. It does not say other practices are worthless. It says loving the Word is what gives them life, the way love is the secret ingredient in a family's favorite recipe.
