The Restless Heart That Forgets Its Song

ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
Dhanaasree mehlaa 1.
Dhanaasaree, First Mehl:
ਜੀਉ ਤਪਤੁ ਹੈ ਬਾਰੋ ਬਾਰ ॥
jee-o tapat hai baaro baar.
My soul burns, over and over again.
ਤਪਿ ਤਪਿ ਖਪੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬੇਕਾਰ ॥
tap tap khapai bahut baykaar.
Burning and burning, it is ruined, and it falls into evil.
ਜੈ ਤਨਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
jai tan banee visar jaa-ay.
That body, which forgets the Word of the Guru's Bani,
ਜਿਉ ਪਕਾ ਰੋਗੀ ਵਿਲਲਾਇ ॥੧॥
ji-o pakaa rogee villaa-ay. ||1||
cries out in pain, like a chronic patient. ||1||

In plain words

My heart grows hot and restless, over and over, whenever it forgets the Word.

A life cut off from its song aches. It is like someone who has been unwell for a long time and longs to feel whole again.

A heart that forgets its song grows restless; remembering it brings ease.
The deeper layer

A heart that forgets its song grows hot and restless.

Jee-o tapat hai baaro baar — the soul burns, again and again. Jai tan banee visar jaa-ay — this happens to the body that forgets the Word. Ji-o pakaa rogee villaa-ay — it cries out like someone who has been sick for a long time.

The verse also says khapai bahut baykaar: burning and burning, it wears itself out and slides into wrong. The picture is of restlessness and ache, like a phone left running hot all day. The sick person in the picture is someone longing to be well, not someone being blamed. Remembering the Word is what brings the ease back.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that settles you down when you feel restless inside?
