He does not die, and is not born; He is always with me. Through the Word of the True Guru's Shabad, I know Him. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Now my heart loves the One alone.

The One never dies and never leaves, and is always right here with me. Through the True Guru's Word, I have come to know the One.

The safest place for your deepest love is the One who never leaves.
The deeper layer

Give your deepest love to the One, who can never be lost.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad, and the turning point of the whole song. Marai na jaavai sad hee sangay — the One never dies, never leaves, and is always with me. This is the answer to the fish and the bee. They loved things that could be taken away. The One cannot be.

It is like the difference between a sandcastle and the beach itself. The waves take the castle. The beach stays.

How do we come to know this One? Satgur sabdee cheenaa — through the Word of the True Guru, the Teacher. The One is recognized, the way you know a voice you love. It is more than something worked out in your head.

A Question to Sit With

What is something in your life you can count on to always be there?
