The Teacher's Ointment Clears Our Eyes

janam janam kay kilvikh dukh bhaagay gur gi-aan anjan naytar deet.
The sins and sorrows of uncounted incarnations run away, when the Guru applies the healing ointment of spiritual wisdom to the eyes.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਇਨ ਦੁਖ ਤੇ ਨਿਕਸਿਓ ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕ ਪਰੀਤ ॥੪॥੯॥
saaDhsang in dukh tay niksi-o naanak ayk pareet. ||4||9||
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I have escaped from these troubles; Nanak loves the One Lord. ||4||9||

In plain words

Long-carried sorrows and mistakes run away when the Teacher smooths the healing balm of wisdom over our eyes.

In the Sangat I stepped free of all this trouble — and now my whole love rests on the One.

Old troubles loosen their grip the moment we can finally see clearly.
The deeper layer

When wisdom clears our eyes, old sorrows and mistakes fall away.

Gur gi-aan anjan naytar deet — the Guru puts the ointment of wisdom on our eyes. Anjan is a healing balm for the eyes. Gi-aan means wisdom. Once the eyes are clear, the old kilvikh dukh — mistakes and sorrows — simply run off. And saaDhsang in dukh tay niksi-o: in the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — the trouble is left behind.

Think of walking through a dark room and stubbing your toe again and again. Nobody needs to punish you for that. You just need the light switched on. The habits from the start of the shabad work the same way. They are not punished. They are healed by clear sight.

A Question to Sit With

When something is finally explained clearly to you, how does the worry around it change?
