Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 4
Verse 5 of 5

Even The Drowning Can Be Lifted

ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਆਖਣੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
karam milai aakhan tayraa naa-o.
By Your Grace, we chant Your Name.
ਜਿਤੁ ਲਗਿ ਤਰਣਾ ਹੋਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥
jit lag tarnaa hor nahee thaa-o.
Becoming attached to it, one is saved; there is no other way.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਡੂਬੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਾਰ ॥
jay ko doobai fir hovai saar.
Even if one is drowning, still, he may be saved.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਰਬ ਦਾਤਾਰ ॥੪॥੩॥੫॥
naanak saachaa sarab daataar. ||4||3||5||
O Nanak, the True Lord is the Giver of all. ||4||3||5||

In plain words

By grace, we even get to speak Your Name. Hold onto it and you are carried; there is no other way.

And even someone going under can still be lifted out. The true One is the Giver of all.

No one is ever beyond rescue; even the drowning can be lifted.
The deeper layer

No one is ever beyond rescue.

This verse, which closes the shabad, is pure hope. Karam milai aakhan tayraa naa-o — by grace, we get to speak Your Name. Jit lag tarnaa — hold on to it, and you get across.

Then comes a tender promise: jay ko doobai fir hovai saar, even someone who is drowning can still be pulled out. Think of a lifeguard who keeps watching the whole pool, every minute. No one is ever written off. Naanak saachaa sarab daataar — the true One is the Giver of all.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel like you are sinking at something, who can help lift you back up?
