Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 4
Verse 4 of 5

Stains That Cloud The Heart

ਜੇਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਰੀਤਿ ਸੁਆਦ ॥
jaytaa moh pareet su-aad.
These worldly attachments, loves and pleasurable tastes,
ਸਭਾ ਕਾਲਖ ਦਾਗਾ ਦਾਗ ॥
sabhaa kaalakh daagaa daag.
all are just black stains.
ਦਾਗ ਦੋਸ ਮੁਹਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਲਾਇ ॥
daag dos muhi chali-aa laa-ay.
One who departs, with these black stains of sin on his face
ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
dargeh baisan naahee jaa-ay. ||3||
shall find no place to sit in the Court of the Lord. ||3||

In plain words

Getting stuck on constant wanting, clinging, and treats leaves smudges on the heart.

Carrying those smudges, a person finds no easy place to rest in the One's presence.

Clinging and craving cloud the heart, but a cloud can always be wiped clean.
The deeper layer

Clinging and craving leave smudges on the heart, and smudges can be wiped clean.

Jaytaa moh pareet su-aad — all the clinging, the grabbing, the craving for treats. Sabhaa kaalakh daagaa daag — all of it is black smudges. It is like greasy fingerprints on a window. The light is still outside, but it is harder to see.

The verse says a person carrying those smudges finds dargeh baisan naahee jaa-ay, no place to sit in the One's Court. The smudges cloud the heart, and clouded glass can be cleaned. They are marks to wipe away, not a stamp of guilt that stays forever.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you want so much that it sometimes clouds how you feel?
