Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 4
Verse 3 of 5

The One Who Gave You Ears And Breath

ਜਿਨਿ ਕਨ ਕੀਤੇ ਅਖੀ ਨਾਕੁ ॥
jin kan keetay akhee naak.
He created our ears, eyes and nose.
ਜਿਨਿ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਦਿਤੀ ਬੋਲੇ ਤਾਤੁ ॥
jin jihvaa ditee bolay taat.
He gave us our tongue to speak so fluently.
ਜਿਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਅਗਨੀ ਪਾਇ ॥
jin man raakhi-aa agnee paa-ay.
He preserved the mind in the fire of the womb;
ਵਾਜੈ ਪਵਣੁ ਆਖੈ ਸਭ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
vaajai pavan aakhai sabh jaa-ay. ||2||
at His Command, the wind blows everywhere. ||2||

In plain words

The One made your ears, your eyes, your nose. The One gave you a tongue to speak so easily.

The One kept you safe and warm before you were born, and by whose flow the very wind moves through the world.

The One who gave you your body and breath is caring for you in every small way.
The deeper layer

The One who made your ears, eyes and voice is caring for you all the time.

Jin kan keetay akhee naak — the One who made your ears, eyes and nose. Jin jihvaa ditee bolay taat — who gave you a tongue that speaks so easily.

Jin man raakhi-aa agnee paa-ay pictures the One keeping us safe in the warmth of the womb, before we were born. Picture a baby snug inside, cared for before anyone could even see it. Vaajai pavan aakhai sabh jaa-ay — at the One's word, the wind blows everywhere. The verse ends huge: the same care that shaped your little ears moves the wind across the whole world.

A Question to Sit With
