Verse 5 of 5

The Only Worship That Is Complete

ਜਾਪ ਤਾਪ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਾ ਪੂਰੀ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਈ ॥
jaap taap bhagat saa pooree jo parabh kai man bhaa-ee.
That alone is perfect chanting, meditation, penance and devotional worship service, which is pleasing to God's Mind.
naam japat tarisnaa sabh bujhee hai naanak taripat aghaa-ee. ||4||10||
Chanting the Naam, all thirst and desire is satisfied; Nanak is satisfied and fulfilled. ||4||10||

In plain words

The truest prayer and devotion is simply whatever gladdens the One's heart.

Holding Your Name, every thirst inside me is quenched, and I am satisfied and full.

The truest devotion is the one offered with love.
The deeper layer

The truest prayer is whatever makes the One glad.

The shabad ends by showing what real worship is. Jaap taap bhagat saa pooree jo parabh kai man bhaa-ee — repeating the Name, discipline and devotion are complete when they please the One. Jaap is repeating the Name, taap is hard self-discipline, and bhagat is loving devotion. What counts most is how sincere the love is, more than how grand it looks. A handmade card from a child can mean more than the most expensive gift.

The fruit of this is tarisnaa sabh bujhee — every thirst is quenched. Tarisnaa is the thirst of always wanting more. The restlessness is finally at rest.

A Question to Sit With

What makes something you do feel heartfelt rather than just going through the motions?
