Verse 2 of 4

One Tongue, and So Much to Praise

ਜਿਹਵਾ ਏਕ ਕਵਨ ਗੁਨ ਕਹੀਐ ॥
jihvaa ayk kavan gun kahee-ai.
I have only one tongue - which of Your Glorious Virtues can I describe?
baysumaar bay-ant su-aamee tayro ant na kin hee lahee-ai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Unlimited, infinite Lord and Master - no one knows Your limits. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have only one tongue — which of Your countless good gifts could I even begin to name?

You are beyond measure, beyond ending; no one has ever found where You stop.

Some things are so good that no amount of thanks could ever be enough.
The deeper layer

There are too many gifts to ever name with one small tongue.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. jihvaa ayk kavan gun kahee-ai — I have only one tongue; which of Your gifts can I describe? On the other side is baysumaar bay-ant, the countless and the endless.

Imagine trying to thank the ocean for every wave. You would run out of words long before it ran out of waves. That is the wonder here. The thanks is bigger than any words can hold. tayro ant na kin hee lahee-ai — no one has ever found where You end.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you feel so grateful for that words do not seem big enough?
