Verse 4 of 4

Priceless, and Given Only by Grace

amrit naam nirmolak har jas tin paa-i-o jis kirpain.
The Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord, and the Praises of the Lord are priceless; he alone obtains them, whom the Lord blesses with His Mercy.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭੇਟੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖਿ ਜਨ ਰੈਨ ॥੩॥੧੩॥
saaDhsang rang parabh bhaytay naanak sukh jan rain. ||3||13||
Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, Nanak lives in the Love of God; his life-night passes in peace. ||3||13||

In plain words

The One's Name and praises are beyond all price; they come to the one the One touches with kindness.

In the Sangat, meeting the One in love, a whole life settles into peace.

The most precious thing cannot be bought with effort — only received with an open heart.
The deeper layer

The Name is priceless, so it can only be given.

Amrit naam nirmolak — the Name is sweet as nectar and nirmolak, beyond any price. Tin paa-i-o jis kirpain — it comes to the one the One shows kindness. None of the big feats in the earlier verses can buy it. It is a gift.

Think of a friend's hug. You cannot buy it in a shop. It can only be given. The Name is like that. It is found in saaDhsang, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. There a whole life passes in sukh, which means peace. The verse calls a life a night, and this night becomes restful at last.

A Question to Sit With

What good things in your life came as gifts rather than rewards you earned?
