Verse 3 of 5

The Hunger That Nothing Fills

ਊਚ ਨੀਚ ਸੂਖ ਦੂਖ ॥
ooch neech sookh dookh.
High and low, pleasure and pain.
ਧ੍ਰਾਪਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੂਖ ॥੨॥
Dharaapas naahee tarisnaa bhookh. ||2||
Hunger and thirst are not satisfied. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Up and down, comfort and hurt — life keeps swinging between them.

And no matter how much we gather, a restless hunger and thirst never quite feel full.

Getting more of what you crave rarely quiets the craving; something deeper does.
The deeper layer

Getting more never fills the hunger inside.

Ooch neech sookh dookh — up and down, comfort and hurt. Life keeps swinging between them, like a seesaw. Dharaapas naahee tarisnaa bhookh — the hunger and thirst of wanting are never satisfied. Tarisnaa means craving, the thirst for more.

Getting more is like drinking salt water. It only makes you thirstier. The verse points past piling things up, toward a fullness that ordinary wanting cannot reach.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed a time when getting the thing you wanted didn't make you feel full for long?
