Verse 5 of 5

Everything Is Yours, and You Are Near

ਜੀਅ ਜਹਾਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਧਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥
jee-a jahaan paraan Dhan tayraa.
The beings and souls and wealth of the world are all Yours.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਨੇਰਾ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੯॥
naanak jaan sadaa har nayraa. ||4||1||19||
O Nanak, know that the Lord is always near at hand. ||4||1||19||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Every life, every breath, and everything the world calls wealth is already Yours.

So know this always: the One is never far — always close at hand.

If everything already belongs to the One, then the One is never far from you.
The deeper layer

Everything belongs to the One, and so the One is always near.

Jee-a jahaan paraan Dhan tayraa — all beings, every breath, and all the world's wealth are Yours. Paraan means breath, life itself. Naanak jaan sadaa har nayraa — know that the One is always close at hand.

This answers the whole prayer. Earlier came the burning sea and the hunger that never ends. Now comes belonging, and nearness. It is like a child in a crowd who looks up and finds a parent's hand already there.

A Question to Sit With

How would today feel different if you remembered that something loving is always near?
