Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 5
Verse 2 of 5

The True One Sees Past Every Word

ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਅੰਧੇ ਕੁਤੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ॥
sun man anDhay kutay koorhi-aar.
Listen, O mind, you blind, false dog!
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੋਲੇ ਬੂਝੀਐ ਸਚਿਆਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bin bolay boojhee-ai sachiaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Even without your speaking, the Lord knows and understands. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Listen, my heart, you who sometimes fool even yourself.

The True One understands everything, even before a single word is spoken.

The One sees your heart directly, so honesty with yourself is the place to start.
The deeper layer

A firm word to your own heart: stop pretending, because the True One already knows.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Sun man anDhay kutay koorhi-aar — listen, O mind, blind and false-dealing. The words are sharp. But they are aimed inward, at the singer's own heart, like a nudge you give yourself. They are never thrown at anyone else.

Why stop pretending? Bin bolay boojhee-ai sachiaar — the True One understands, even without a word spoken. It is like trying to hide a grin from a parent who already knows. The correction is inward, and kind.

A Question to Sit With

When is it hardest to be honest with yourself?
