A Counterfeit Coin Shows In The Testing

ਚੋਰੁ ਸੁਆਲਿਉ ਚੋਰੁ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥
chor su-aali-o chor si-aanaa.
A thief may be handsome, and a thief may be wise,
ਖੋਟੇ ਕਾ ਮੁਲੁ ਏਕੁ ਦੁਗਾਣਾ ॥
khotay kaa mul ayk dugaanaa.
but he is still just a counterfeit coin, worth only a shell.
ਜੇ ਸਾਥਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਦੀਜੈ ਰਲਾਇ ॥
jay saath rakhee-ai deejai ralaa-ay.
If it is kept and mixed with other coins,
ਜਾ ਪਰਖੀਐ ਖੋਟਾ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
jaa parkhee-ai khotaa ho-ay jaa-ay. ||2||
it will be found to be false, when the coins are inspected. ||2||

In plain words

A cheat may be good-looking and clever, but a fake coin is still worth almost nothing.

Slip it in among the good coins and it can hide for a while. But when the coins are tested, the fake shows.

Clever words and good looks can hide a false heart for a while, but testing shows what is true.
The deeper layer

Truth lasts longer than polish.

Chor su-aali-o chor si-aanaa — a cheat may be good-looking, and a cheat may be clever. Khotay kaa mul ayk dugaanaa — but a khotaa, a fake coin, is worth only a shell.

This is Dhanaasaree's money language, turned toward character. Looks and cleverness can blend in with the real thing for a while, like a plastic apple in a bowl of fruit. Jaa parkhee-ai khotaa ho-ay jaa-ay — when the coins are tested, the fake shows. Truth outlasts polish.

A Question to Sit With

How can you tell whether something, or someone, is genuine and not just shiny?
