Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 5
Verse 4 of 5

You Harvest What You Plant

ਜੈਸਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਤੈਸਾ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
jaisaa karay so taisaa paavai.
As one acts, so does he receive.
ਆਪਿ ਬੀਜਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਖਾਵੈ ॥
aap beej aapay hee khaavai.
As he plants, so does he eat.
ਜੇ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਆਪੇ ਖਾਇ ॥
jay vadi-aa-ee-aa aapay khaa-ay.
He may praise himself gloriously,
ਜੇਹੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਤੇਹੈ ਰਾਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
jayhee surat tayhai raahi jaa-ay. ||3||
but still, according to his understanding, so is the path he must follow. ||3||

In plain words

As you act, so it returns to you. You eat what you plant.

Someone may pile praise on themselves, but you still travel the road your own understanding builds.

You harvest what you plant, and self-praise cannot change the crop.
The deeper layer

What you plant is what you harvest.

Jaisaa karay so taisaa paavai — as you act, so you receive. Aap beej aapay hee khaavai — you eat what you yourself plant. This is karma in plain farming words, and children know the word. Plant tomatoes, and you get tomatoes.

Praising yourself changes nothing. Jayhee surat tayhai raahi jaa-ay — as your understanding is, so is the road you walk. Surat means your inner attention, where your mind is pointed. The way you face inside quietly builds the path under your feet.

A Question to Sit With

What is a small good habit you are planting now that might grow into something later?
