Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 52
Verse 4 of 4

Whatever Pleases You Is Enough

ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
jo tuDh bhaavai so parvaan.
Whatever pleases You, Lord, that alone is acceptable.
ਤੇਰੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਨੋ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥
tayray bhaanay no kurbaan.
I am a sacrifice to Your Will.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗਰੀਬੁ ਬੰਦਾ ਜਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥
naanak gareeb bandaa jan tayraa.
Poor Nanak is Your slave, Your humble servant.

Save me, O my Lord God Master! ||4||1||22||

In plain words

Whatever You wish, that is what I welcome — I give my whole heart to Your way.

I am simply Yours, a small servant with empty hands; please keep me safe, my Master.

There is deep peace in trusting the flow of life instead of fighting it.
The deeper layer

Trust brings peace, even with empty hands.

The shabad ends by turning from mix-up to trust. Jo tuDh bhaavai so parvaan — whatever pleases You is welcome to me. Tayray bhaanay no kurbaan — I give myself gladly to Your will. Kurbaan means giving yourself with joy. Bhaanaa is the One's way, which is hukam, the flow of existence.

Nanak calls himself a poor servant with nothing in his hands. That is peace, not shame. Think of floating on your back in a pool. The moment you stop fighting the water, it holds you up.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you can't control that feels lighter once you stop fighting it?
