The Name That Melts a Million Pains

ਜੀਅਨ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਭ ਠਾਇ ॥
jee-an kaa daataa pooran sabh thaa-ay.
The Giver of all beings is totally pervading everywhere.
ਕੋਟਿ ਕਲੇਸ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥
kot kalays miteh har naa-ay.
Millions of pains are removed by the Lord's Name.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਸਗਲਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਨਾਸੈ ॥
janam maran saglaa dukh naasai.
All the pains of birth and death are taken away
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਬਾਸੈ ॥੨॥
gurmukh jaa kai man tan baasai. ||2||
from the Gurmukh, within whose mind and body the Lord dwells. ||2||

In plain words

The Giver of all life fills every place, everywhere.

Countless troubles melt away with the One's Name, and the ache of coming and going quiets in the heart where the One lives.

Turning toward the One can quietly melt away troubles that felt countless.
The deeper layer

The Name melts away troubles, and the One lives in the heart that turns toward the teaching.

The Giver of all life fills every place. kot kalays miteh har naa-ay — millions of troubles melt away with the One's Name, like snow when the sun comes out.

Then the verse names the gurmukh, a person turned toward the Guru's teaching. The gurmukh is simply the one jaa kai man tan baasai, in whose mind and body the One has come to live. It is about presence, not achievement. It is not a prize for being good. It is the One making a home in you. And there, the pain of coming and going, of birth and death, is lifted.

A Question to Sit With

What is a worry that felt huge until you finally let it go?
