Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 54
Verse 2 of 5

The Guru, Mother and Father Both

ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥
sir oopar maat pitaa gurdayv.
The Divine Guru, my mother and father, is over my head.
ਸਫਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੇਵ ॥
safal moorat jaa kee nirmal sayv.
His image brings prosperity; serving Him, we become pure.
ਏਕੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
ayk niranjan jaa kee raas.
The One Lord, the Immaculate Lord, is our capital.
ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੋਵਤ ਪਰਗਾਸ ॥੧॥
mil saaDhsangat hovat pargaas. ||1||
Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, we are illumined and enlightened. ||1||

In plain words

The teacher watches over me like a mother and a father together.

Being near that goodness makes life brighter, and serving it makes us clean. The one, spotless Oneness is my true wealth. In the Sangat, a light switches on inside.

The best kind of guidance holds you with both strength and tenderness.
The deeper layer

The Teacher cares for us like a mother and a father at once.

sir oopar maat pitaa gurdayv — over my head is the Teacher, my mother and father. That means complete, tender care that covers every side of you. Serving that goodness makes us clean inside.

ayk niranjan jaa kee raas — the one spotless One is our raas, our true wealth. Niranjan means without any stain. Then, mil saaDhsangat hovat pargaas — joining the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — an inner light dawns. It is like walking into a room of friends and feeling your whole face light up.

A Question to Sit With

Who in your life gives you both gentle care and steady guidance?
