The wretched self-willed manmukhs are ruined through fear and dread. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When you hold the One close in your heart, why would you ever be afraid?

It is turning away and feeling all alone that leaves a heart worn thin with worry.

Fear loosens its grip when you remember you are held.
The deeper layer

Someone who holds the One close has nothing to fear.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It sets two hearts side by side. so kat darai — why would anyone be afraid who keeps the Master in mind? The other heart is the manmukh, a heart turned toward itself. dar dar pachay — it wears itself out with worry and dread.

The manmukh is not a villain. It is simply a heart that has turned away and feels alone. Think of a child who lets go of a parent's hand in a crowd. The crowd feels scary. When the child holds the hand again, the fear goes.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel less afraid when you're facing something scary?
