Nanak lives, in the dust of the Saints. ||4||2||23||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

With my hands gently pressed together, I offer my prayer.

Let me serve the saints with love and sing of the One, the treasure of all goodness — I am kept alive by the humble dust at the feet of the saints.

Humbly serving and learning from holy people brings life.
The deeper layer

Humility and serving holy people bring life.

du-ay kar jorh karee ardaas — with both hands joined, I offer my prayer. Ardaas means a heartfelt prayer. At the very end comes santaa Dhoor, the dust of the saints' feet. It means being humble enough to stand where holy people walk. That humility is where life comes from.

Think of a child who carries water for the cooks at a community kitchen. By serving them, the child shares in their good work. In the same way, serving and honoring holy people is itself a way of touching the One. The One is guntaas, the treasure of all goodness.

A Question to Sit With

What have you learned from watching someone kind and good-hearted up close?
