Verse 3 of 3

Hold Fast to the Shelter Within

gahu paarbarahm saran hirdai kamal charan avar aas kachh patal na keejai.
In your heart, hold fast to the Sanctuary of the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord God; do not place your hopes in any other support.
so-ee bhagat gi-aanee Dhi-aanee tapaa so-ee naanak jaa ka-o kirpaa keejai. ||3||1||29||
He alone is a devotee, spiritually wise, a meditator, and a penitent, O Nanak, who is blessed by the Lord's Mercy. ||3||1||29||

In plain words

In your own heart, hold fast to the gentle shelter of the One, and don't pin your hopes on anything that can't hold you up.

The one who is devoted, wise, awake and disciplined is simply the one touched by the One's kindness.

Wisdom and devotion are gifts of grace, not badges to compete for.
The deeper layer

Grace is what makes someone good, more than any title.

gahu paarbarahm saran hirdai — hold fast, in your heart, to the shelter of the Highest One. Place your hope there and nowhere else, the way a climber trusts one strong rope.

The close gently levels every spiritual title. bhagat is a devoted one. gi-aanee is a wise one. Dhi-aanee is one who meditates. tapaa is one who lives a hard, disciplined life. All of them come down to one thing: jaa ka-o kirpaa keejai, the one touched by grace. Grace, not rank, is the whole measure.

A Question to Sit With

Why do you think being kind matters more than being called wise or important?
