Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
When the ways of humble, loving people live inside my heart, my whole self feels washed clean by their nearness.
Let me stay close to Your humble servants, even to the dust at their feet — that closeness, and nothing fancier, is where I find peace.
Peace comes from sitting close to the Guru's people and learning from them.
Jan kay charan vaseh mayrai hee-arai — the feet of the humble live in my heart. Jan kee Dhoor dayh kirpaa niDh — treasure of mercy, give me the dust of the feet of the humble. Kirpaa niDh means treasure of mercy.
The dust of their feet is an old picture of choosing to be humble. Peace does not come from being above others. It comes from valuing their goodness enough to sit beneath it. Think of sitting at a grandparent's feet to hear their stories. Being low there is a joy. That nearness is the only thing asked of the treasure of mercy.
Whose goodness rubs off on you when you are near them?
