The Name Is His Honor

ਜਨ ਕਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਸੋਭ ॥
jan ka-o naam vadaa-ee sobh.
The Naam is the glory and greatness of the Lord's humble servant.

naamo gat naamo pat jan kee maanai jo jo hog. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The Naam is his salvation, and the Naam is his honor; he accepts whatever comes to pass. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

The Naam is the greatness and the good name of the One's humble servant.

The Naam is their rescue, the Naam is their honor, and they accept with an open heart whatever comes.

When your dignity rests in the One, nothing outside can take it from you.
The deeper layer

When your worth rests in the Name, the ups and downs of life stop deciding it.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It stacks up four gifts the Name gives. Vadaa-ee is greatness. Sobh is a good name. Gat is being set free. Pat is honor.

Maanai jo jo hog — they accept whatever happens. This is the fruit. Think of a wobbly toy with a weight at the bottom. Push it over, and it rocks right back up. When your worth is anchored in the Name, what happens outside cannot knock it down.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you usually look for approval? What would change if you already felt honored inside?
