Verse 3 of 3

Wealth That Is Truly Yours

ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਪਾਲੈ ਸੋਈ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਾਹਾ ॥
naam Dhan jis jan kai paalai so-ee pooraa saahaa.
That humble servant, who has the Naam as his wealth, is the perfect banker.
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਉਹਾਰਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਧਾਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਲਾਹਾ ॥੨॥੬॥੩੭॥
naam bi-uhaaraa naanak aaDhaaraa naam paraapat laahaa. ||2||6||37||
The Naam is his occupation, O Nanak, and his only support; the Naam is the profit he earns. ||2||6||37||

In plain words

The one who carries the Name as their real wealth is the richest, most trustworthy banker of all.

The Name is their work, their support, and the only true profit they ever take home.

The only wealth you keep for good is what you carry on the inside.
The deeper layer

The Name is the one kind of wealth you can never lose.

The verse paints a picture of a banker. Naam Dhan, the wealth of the Name, is the money in the bank. Bi-uhaaraa is the business, the daily work. AaDhaaraa is the support underneath it all. Laahaa is the profit.

Pooraa saahaa, the perfect banker, is the one whose whole account book is the Name. Money in a savings account can run out or be left behind. This wealth can never be lost or left behind.

A Question to Sit With

If you could 'save up' one inner quality like money, what would you want the most of?
