One, Outside and In

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਇਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਬਤਾਈ ॥
baahar bheetar ayko jaanhu ih gur gi-aan bataa-ee.
Outside and inside, know that there is only the One Lord; the Guru has imparted this wisdom to me.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਆਪਾ ਚੀਨੈ ਮਿਟੈ ਨ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਕੀ ਕਾਈ ॥੨॥੧॥
jan naanak bin aapaa cheenai mitai na bharam kee kaa-ee. ||2||1||
O servant Nanak, without knowing one's own self, the moss of doubt is not removed. ||2||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Outside you and inside you, know that there is only the One — this is the wisdom the Guide gives.

Until you come to know your own true self, the thin film of doubt over the heart does not clear away.

Knowing your own self is what clears the film of doubt.
The deeper layer

There is only One, outside you and inside you, and knowing yourself clears away the doubt.

Baahar bheetar ayko jaanhu — know that outside and inside, there is only the One. The verse says it plainly.

Then: bin aapaa cheenai — without knowing your own self — mitai na bharam kee kaa-ee. The kaa-ee is a thin green film, like moss on a still pond. Here it is the film of doubt, and it stays until you come to know yourself.

Think of a pond covered in green scum. You cannot see the water underneath. Knowing yourself is what clears the surface, so you can see down to what was always there.

A Question to Sit With

What is one honest thing you've learned about yourself lately?
