Fragrance in the Flower

ਪੁਹਪ ਮਧਿ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਸੁ ਬਸਤੁ ਹੈ ਮੁਕਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਜੈਸੇ ਛਾਈ ॥
puhap maDh ji-o baas basat hai mukar maahi jaisay chhaa-ee.
Like the fragrance which remains in the flower, and like the reflection in the mirror,
ਤੈਸੇ ਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਬਸੇ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਘਟ ਹੀ ਖੋਜਹੁ ਭਾਈ ॥੧॥
taisay hee har basay nirantar ghat hee khojahu bhaa-ee. ||1||
the Lord dwells deep within; search for Him within your own heart, O Siblings of Destiny. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The scent lives quietly inside the flower. Your reflection lives inside the mirror.

Just so, the One lives deep inside you without a break. So look for the One right there, inside your own heart.

The One is inside you the way scent is already inside a flower.
The deeper layer

The One is inside you the way scent is inside a flower.

Two pictures carry the teaching. The first is puhap maDh ji-o baas: the fragrance that is already in the flower. You cannot see it, but it is there. The second is mukar maahi jaisay chhaa-ee: the reflection that is already in the mirror.

Taisay hee har basay nirantar — just like that, the One lives within, without a break. So ghat hee khojahu: search right there, inside your own heart.

A Question to Sit With

Where inside yourself do you feel most quiet and most at home?
