Verse 4 of 4

The One God Living In All

ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਵਸੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਇ ॥
sabh meh vasai parabh ayko so-ay.
He is the One God, abiding within all.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਘਟਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
gurmatee ghat pargat ho-ay.
Through the Guru's Teachings, He is revealed in the heart.
ਸਹਜੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ॥
sehjay jin parabh jaan pachhaani-aa.
One who intuitively knows and realizes God,
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak naam milai man maani-aa. ||4||1||
O Nanak, obtains the Naam; his mind is pleased and appeased. ||4||1||

In plain words

The one One lives inside everyone.

Through the Guru's teaching, it shines out in the heart. Whoever, in natural ease, knows and recognizes the One receives the Name, and the mind is finally at peace.

The One lives in everyone, and knowing this brings the mind to rest.
The deeper layer

The same One lives in everyone, and knowing it brings the mind to rest.

This verse closes the shabad. Sabh meh vasai prabh ayko so-ay — the one One lives in all. It is the same picture as the Aartee, Guru Nanak's song of the one Light in everyone, now said again in Guru Amar Das's voice. Think of one sun shining in a hundred puddles after the rain. Many puddles, one sun.

This truth shows itself gurmatee, through the Guru's teaching. A person who recognizes the One sehjay, naturally and easily, naam milai man maani-aa: receives the Name, and the mind is content, at peace with itself at last.

A Question to Sit With

How might your day feel different if you remembered the same One is in everyone you meet?
