Verse 6 of 9

Cleverness Is Not the Same as Knowing

ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭੂਲਹਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਹਿ ॥
parh parh bhooleh chotaa khaahi.
Reading and studying, one becomes confused, and suffers punishment.
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
bahut si-aanap aavahi jaahi.
By great cleverness, one is consigned to coming and going in reincarnation.
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਭਉ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
naam japai bha-o bhojan khaa-ay.
One who chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and eats the food of the Fear of God
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੫॥
gurmukh sayvak rahay samaa-ay. ||5||
becomes Gurmukh, the Lord's servant, and remains absorbed in the Lord. ||5||

In plain words

Piling up books and study alone can leave you tangled and knocked about.

Being clever for its own sake just keeps the heart restless and roaming.

But the one who holds the Name, and lives with a healthy awe of the One,

turns toward the teaching, serves quietly, and stays settled in the One.

Clever answers feed the head; awe and the Naam feed the heart.
The deeper layer

Knowing a lot and understanding are two different things.

Parh parh bhooleh chotaa khaahi: reading and reading, people get confused and knocked about. Bahut si-aanap aavahi jaahi: too much cleverness keeps the heart restless and roaming. Think of a student who memorizes every answer for a test but never understands the lesson. The facts are all there, yet the heart has not changed.

What settles the heart instead? Naam japai bha-o bhojan khaa-ay: hold the Name, and take a healthy awe of the One as your daily food. Bha-o here means wonder and deep respect. The one who lives this way stays settled in the One.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever known a lot about something without understanding it?
