Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 94
Verse 5 of 9

The Maker Fills the Vessel

ਆਪਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਖੈ ॥
aap dikhaavai aapay daykhai.
He Himself watches over us, and He Himself makes us see.
ਹਠਿ ਨ ਪਤੀਜੈ ਨਾ ਬਹੁ ਭੇਖੈ ॥
hath na pateejai naa baho bhaykhai.
He is not pleased by stubborn-mindedness, nor by various religious robes.
ਘੜਿ ਭਾਡੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
gharh bhaaday jin amrit paa-i-aa.
He fashioned the body-vessels, and infused the Ambrosial Nectar into them;
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਮਨੁ ਪਤੀਆਇਆ ॥੪॥
paraym bhagat parabh man patee-aa-i-aa. ||4||
God's Mind is pleased only by loving devotional worship. ||4||

In plain words

The One both shows us the way and watches us walk it.

Stubbornness does not win the One over, and neither do fancy religious costumes.

The One shaped these bodies like vessels and poured sweetness into each of them.

What delights the One is simple: loving devotion, offered from the heart.

The Maker fills every vessel; love is what delights the Maker.
The deeper layer

The One is won over by love, and only by love.

Hath na pateejai naa baho bhaykhai: the One is not pleased by hath, stubborn force, or by many bhaykh, religious robes and outfits. Wearing a team jersey does not make you a good player. What counts is how you play.

Then comes a picture of a potter: gharh bhaaday jin amrit paa-i-aa. The One shaped each body like a clay pot and poured amrit, sweet nectar, into it. And what pleases the One? Paraym bhagat, loving devotion offered from the heart.

A Question to Sit With

What matters more — how you look on the outside, or what fills you inside?
