Verse 4 of 9

The True One Lives in the Mind

ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਚਾ ॥
tan meh manoo-aa man meh saachaa.
The mind is in the body, and the True Lord is in the mind.
ਸੋ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਰਾਚਾ ॥
so saachaa mil saachay raachaa.
Merging into the True Lord, one is absorbed into Truth.
ਸੇਵਕੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਲਾਗੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
sayvak parabh kai laagai paa-ay.
God's servant bows at His feet.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੩॥
satgur pooraa milai milaa-ay. ||3||
Meeting the True Guru, one meets with the Lord. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My mind lives inside my body, and the True One lives inside my mind.

Meeting that True One, I blend into truth and become part of it.

One who serves bows gently at the feet of the One.

And when a whole and true guide arrives, the meeting itself is arranged for you.

What you are seeking is already living inside you.
The deeper layer

The True One is closer than we think.

Tan meh manoo-aa man meh saachaa: the mind lives in the body, and the True One lives in the mind. It is like searching the whole house for your glasses while they sit on your head. What is real is nearer than the places we look for it.

The last line says the final meeting is milai milaa-ay: you meet because you are brought to meet. We do not build this meeting like a machine. When the whole, true Guru comes, the meeting is arranged for us, as a gift.

A Question to Sit With

What might you find if you looked inward instead of outward?
