Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 94
Verse 3 of 9

Choose the One Who Plants Truth

ਸੋ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਉ ਜਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਵੈ ॥
so gur kara-o je saach darirh-aavai.
So make Him your Guru, who implants the Truth within you,
ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥਾਵੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥
akath kathaavai sabad milaavai.
who leads you to speak the Unspoken Speech, and who merges you in the Word of the Shabad.
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਗ ਅਵਰ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਰਾ ॥
har kay log avar nahee kaaraa.
God's people have no other work to do;
ਸਾਚਉ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥੨॥
saacha-o thaakur saach pi-aaraa. ||2||
they love the True Lord and Master, and they love the Truth. ||2||

In plain words

Choose as your guide the one who plants what is real and true deep inside you.

That guide helps you speak of what words can barely reach, and joins you to the living Word.

People who belong to the One have no other real task than this.

They love the True One, and they love truth itself.

A real guide plants truth that stays.
The deeper layer

A true guide is someone who helps truth grow roots inside you.

So gur kara-o je saach darirh-aavai: make that one your Guru who plants truth firmly in you. Think of a gardener. A good gardener does not just show you pretty flowers. They plant the seed deep, so it takes root and stays.

That is the test of a real guide. It is not a big show. It is whether truth grows in you and lasts. Such a guide also joins you to the shabad, the living Word: akath kathaavai sabad milaavai, the guide helps you speak of what words can barely reach, and joins you to the Word.

A Question to Sit With

How can you tell if a teacher is helping you grow?
