I look to Your support, O Holy Saint; give me Your hand, and protect me. By Your Grace, let me meet the Lord, my King. ||1||

In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

Everyone who is born into this world gets tangled up in it, one way or another.

This human life is a rare and lucky gift.

So I lean on the shelter of the wise and good — hold out your hand and keep me safe.

By grace, let me be brought close to the One, my King.

A rare life is worth placing in good hands.
The deeper layer

This human life is a rare gift, and I reach for a hand to guide me.

This shabad is an Ashtapadee, a song of eight verses, by Guru Arjan. It is one long, honest asking. Everyone born into this world gets tangled up in it. But maanas janam sanjog paa-i-aa — this human birth came through a rare and lucky joining. It is like finding one four-leaf clover in a whole field.

So I reach for ot, shelter, from the saaDh, the holy and wise. I ask to be taken by the hand, like a small child crossing a busy street, and brought close to the One.

A Question to Sit With

What in your life feels like a rare gift worth protecting?
